The Gosau valley was first colonised in the 13th century by the St. Peter monastery in Salzburg. Due to the fact that the salt mines in Hallstatt needed a lot of wood, the lumberjacks in Gosau have a long tradition. They were also operating small mountain huts besides their main work in the forest. Some of these former huts are still operated by descendants of the woodcutters.

The Gosau valley is well known for its geological characteristics. Visitors will find a lot of fossilised ammonites, mussels, slugs, corals and other plants. From the 16th until the middle of the 20th century, the grindstone quarries in Gosau were an important source of income due to the fact that the grindstones were exported all over the world. During the summer months, guests can still have a look at the old tradition of producing grindstones.

The merger of Gosau, Russbach and Annaberg created Upper Austrias largest skiing region Dachstein West. Accordingly winter tourism has a high significance but also summer tourism is on the rise due to the perfect combination of nature and culture.
